KARU provides intensive family
support services to prevent Aboriginal children
going into care as well as assist children to
return to their families. Where children are
taken into care, legislation requires that KARU is
advised so that we are able to ensure that
placements are in the best interest of the child
and that cultural, community and family links are
maintained.
The Family Support Program provides assistance
in the following areas:
Families with children in care
or where there is life skills difficulties and/or
neglect of children's physical and/or
developmental needs;
Families who are at
risk of their children going into care;
Families where there are alcohol and/or
other substance abuse
issues; and
Providing families
with parenting skills,
practical skills such as budgeting, shopping,
paying bills and other basic requirements of
modern life and personal development.
Family Support Workers provide the day to
day service to our clients. Their
role is:
-
to enter into a helping relationship
and forming a partnership with the client;
- To identify
strengths and resources that the client can use
to change their situation;
and
- To support and guide this process.
KARU also supports other agencies and programs to
provide family support services, including
referral and advice, after-school care,
recreational activities and reintegrating families
after a period of imprisonment.
This service is provided to Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Families
in the Northern Territory, subject to resources.
All contacts and enquiries made to this office are
strictly confidential.
